“Acchianata” to the Sanctuary: Hiking on Monte Pellegrino

A hike through nature, spirituality, and breathtaking views.

Monte Pellegrino, described by Goethe as “the most beautiful promontory in the world,” is one of Palermo’s most beloved landmarks.
Its imposing rocky silhouette towers over the cityscape and is home to the Monte Pellegrino Nature Reserve — a peaceful oasis of biodiversity with caves, pine forests, and spectacular views of the gulf.

At the spiritual heart of the mountain lies the Sanctuary of Saint Rosalia, built into the rock itself and a destination of deep devotion.
Saint Rosalia, the patron saint of Palermo, is said to have lived in a cave here.
According to tradition, her miraculous discovery in 1624 marked the end of a devastating plague in the city.
Since then, thousands of faithful pilgrims walk the ancient path to the sanctuary each year, in what Palermitans affectionately call the “Acchianata” — the climb.

The route

Starting from our property, it’s just a 10–15 minute walk to the beginning of the historic trail leading up to the Sanctuary.
The path winds through the greenery and serenity of the nature reserve, offering peace and stunning views at every turn.
The full climb takes about 1 hour (one way) and rewards hikers with unforgettable vistas over the city, the sea, and Sicily’s northern coastline.

At the top, you can visit the Sanctuary, stop for a picnic in the fresh air, or simply enjoy one of the most scenic viewpoints in Palermo.
